You are here: Kirkwood Hospice - Caring For Patients - Therapies - Occupational and Physio Therapy Occupational Therapy and PhysiotherapyThe Occupational Therapist and the Physiotherapist use physical means such as movement and electrotherapy to help patients cope with symptoms ranging from pain, breathlessness and fatigue to depression and anxiety. They aim to help patients remain as independent as possible, as far as their illness allows. Patients may be seen as in-patients, during the day as out-patients in the Support & Therapy Centre or in their own homes. The Therapists can also advise family members and carers on things they can do to help the patient move as easily as possible, to prevent falls at home and to maintain safety and comfort for both the patient and their carers. They can arrange for the loan of basic equipment to help with mobility and independence and they work closely with the Hospice’s Social Workers in helping to discharge patients home with the appropriate equipment and support. They also work closely with Community Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy Teams to enable the patient to remain at home for as long as they wish. The Physiotherapist can also advise patients about managing lymphoedema and provides basic treatment for mild, uncomplicated lymphoedema. For further information contact Ginny Burgoyne, Occupational Therapist or Diane Case, Physiotherapist, on telephone number 01484 557900. |
