Kirkwood Thanks Its Student Volunteers

Friday, 10 February, 2012

February 20-26 is Student Volunteering Week 2012, an annual event to celebrate the contribution that thousands of student volunteers make across the UK.

At Kirkwood Hospice we want to use the week to:
• say thank you to the students who give their time and expertise working alongside us
• let the people of Kirklees know about the many ways in which students help us on a regular basis
• remind students of opportunities available to them to develop skills and meet new people whilst volunteering for their local hospice

Students visit the Hospice in Dalton on a regular basis and volunteer in a variety of ways such as providing support to our fundraising team and helping in the in-patient area.

In addition, our 17 charity shops are well supported by student volunteers in a variety of ways.   During 2011 our shop in Batley worked closely with students from Batley School of Art who reworked tired garments into new on-trend designs.   These garments were well received by our shoppers in Batley and the project demonstrates the mutual benefit of working closely with local students.

2012 is an important year for the Hospice as we celebrate our 25th anniversary and launch our Capital Appeal to raise the funds needed to refurbish and extend our in-patient unit.  This will bring with it new volunteer opportunities.  If you are interested in being part of this exciting challenge then please text vol to 67777 to find out more.

Finally a big thank you to our student volunteers for all their hard work during 2011 from everyone at Kirkwood Hospice.
