Successful Sponsored Walk expanded to help 4 Hospices

Kirkwood, Wakefield, Overgate and West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Children’s Hospices are to benefit from the second annual sponsored walk ‘The Rotary Navigation’ which is to be held on Sunday 1 April 2012.The first Rotary Navigation  in April 2011 raised nearly £8000 and it is hoped to significantly increase the amount in 2012.

The walk will again be along the Calder and Hebble Navigation and has now been extended from The Navigation Inn at Horbury to The Wharf at Sowerby Bridge, a total of 19 miles but with start/finish point options along the way at Dewsbury, Mirfield, Brighouse, Elland and Sowerby Bridge – each leg about 4 miles long. Walkers can choose the direction they wish to walk. The walk is level on existing canal towpaths or other well established foot paths and the stretch from Brighouse to Elland and Sowerby Bridge is hard surfaced making it suitable for pushchair use. The stretch between Brighouse and Mirfield provides the most difficult walking on some quite narrow and uneven footpaths, as well as about 1.25 miles through industrial areas of Brighouse.

Walkers will be asked to nominate their start and finish places and free transport will be arranged to get them to their start. Transport can only be guaranteed for walkers registering before 23rd March 2012.

The walk registration fee is £5 per person and a family registration for 2 adults and up to 4 children under 16 yrs is available for £12.

The start/finish points and marshal points along the route, including road crossings, will be manned from 8.30am until 4.30pm. All walkers are asked to set off before 10am. Walkers can register at the start points on the day but earlier registration is encouraged.

To register, download a registration form from www.rotarynavigation.co.uk or contact the Registration Officer on 01924 279836. The website also contains Health and Safety Advice to walkers, parking suggestions and maps of the route as well as links to the 4 Hospice sites.

The walk is a fund raising joint venture organised by the Rotary Club of Horbury and Ossett Phoenix, Rotary Club of Mirfield, Rotary Club of Ossett, Rotary Club of Dewsbury, Rotary Club of Brighouse, Rotary Club of Elland and Rotary Club of Sowerby Bridge.  President Roger Parkinson of the Horbury and Ossett Phoenix Club said “ After the success of last year’s walk we saw the opportunity to expand our co-operation with other Rotary Clubs and are very hopeful that we can raise even more money for the Hospices which need every penny they can get to continue their tremendous work”
