SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT MASTER CLASS (I)
Wakefield Hospice Education Department – 17 October
9.00am – 4.30pm £50.00 (lunch and refreshments are included)
Topics to be covered include:
Breast Cancer Dr Charlotte Clare, Consultant in Palliative Medicine
End Stage Heart Failure Dr Anne Marie Seymour, Consultant in Palliative Medicine
Fungating wounds Michelle Sykes, Clinical Nurse Manager
COPD Dr Ramesh Thulavavenkateswaran, Hospice Practitioner
Sessions will also incorporate issues such as diversity; communication/breaking bad news and spirituality
Professional Awareness Days
23 June; 14 July; 22 September; 13 October; 17 November and 15 December
10.00am – 3.00pm
These days are designed to accommodate health and social care staff and students, wishing to increase their awareness of the hospice. Each day is flexible and aims to meet the visitors’ specific learning needs. The programme often includes the following:
- An overview of palliative care and the hospice
- Services provided
- Referral criteria
- A tour around the hospice
- Clinical issues
Additional information days and longer placements are also allocated for medical students, G.P. registrars, student nurses, physiotherapy, police and social work students.
AN EXPLORATION OF GRIEF (for people with learning disabilities)
Monday 27 October
1.30pm – 4.00pm
This session is for people with learning disabilities to explore the emotional impact of when a family member or friend dies.
KIRKLEES EDUCATION PROGRAMME IN PALLIATIVE CARE (for support staff, home care staff and health care assistants)
25 June; 27 August; 29 October; 17 December
These study sessions are designed for Social Services home carers, health care assistants (community) and Crossroads care staff. All sessions are from 10.00am – 1.00pm.
Topics discussed include:
- An overview of palliative care
- Skin care and hygiene
- Mouth care
- Nutrition
- Pressure area care
- Pain management
- Recognising when a person may be dying
- What to do when finding someone unconscious
- After the person has died
- An explanation of the grieving process
HUDDERSFIELD UNIVERSITY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES
Kirkwood Hospice has close links with Huddersfield University and provides the setting for several multi-professional palliative care courses that are facilitated within the education centre. All the study modules may be accessed individually or alternatively within a specific framework such as:
- Certificate in Professional Studies (Palliative Care)
- Certificate in Professional Studies (Breast Care)
- BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Palliative Care)
Study modules include:
