PALLIATIVE MEDICINE FOR GPs’

Tuesday                 23 September                     6.30pm – 9.00pm

The above study sessions will be presented by hospice medical personnel and will focus on case-based symptom management.  For further details please contact Dr Charlotte Clare, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, charlottec@kirkwoodhospice.co.uk   

A buffet and (optional) tour of the hospice premises will be included at the start of each session.  

Professional Awareness Days
23 June; 14 July; 22 September; 13 October; 17 November and 15 December
10.00am – 3.00pm
These days are designed to accommodate health and social care staff and students, wishing to increase their awareness of the hospice.  Each day is flexible and aims to meet the visitors’ specific learning needs. The programme often includes the following:

  • An overview of palliative care and the hospice
  • Services provided
  • Referral criteria
  • A tour around the hospice
  • Clinical issues

Additional information days and longer placements are also allocated for medical students, G.P. registrars, student nurses, physiotherapy, police and social work students.

 

SUPPORTING PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES WHEN SOMEONE DIES
Monday                  29 September        
1.00pm – 4.30pm    £20.00 (including refreshments)

This study afternoon will offer ways to inform people with learning disabilities that someone has died.  Strategies to effectively support bereaved individuals will also be explored. 

PALLIATIVE CARE COURSE FOR HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE ASSISTANTS

This annual six day course for auxiliary staff takes place over the summer period between June and September, two days per week.  Specialist staff working in palliative care will present information on a number of topics, including:

  • Loss and bereavement
  • Attitudes to death and dying
  • Communication issues
  • Symptom control
  • The impact of life threatening illness
  • Cultural and religious issues
  • Body image and sexuality
  • Team working in palliative care

HUDDERSFIELD UNIVERSITY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

Kirkwood Hospice has close links with Huddersfield University and provides the setting for several multi-professional palliative care courses that are facilitated within the education centre.  All the study modules may be accessed individually or alternatively within a specific framework such as:

  • Certificate in Professional Studies (Palliative Care)
  • Certificate in Professional Studies (Breast Care)
  • BSc (Hons) Professional Studies (Palliative Care)

Study modules include:

  • Symptom Management in Palliative Care
  • Enhancing Quality in Palliative and Terminal Care
  • Advanced Communication Skills in Palliative Care
  • Perspectives on Death, Dying, Loss and Bereavement
  • Breast Care:  interventions and support in the management of breast disease
