Capital Appeal
Providing a 21st Century Hospice; providing 21st Century care
“When someone you love is so ill, having one more day, one more happy day, that’s what really matters.” (Relative of a hospice patient, 2011)
Each New Year brings with it new hopes, challenges and opportunities for us all. However, for everyone at Kirkwood 2012 is set to be even more special than usual. Not only is it a landmark year which includes the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the Hospice (on the 18th March), but it also brings the launch of the biggest building project since Kirkwood was built and, with it, the first Capital Appeal at the Hospice in over a decade.
Since its official opening in 1987, we have provided specialist palliative care, free of charge, for tens of thousands of people in Kirklees who are living with cancer and other life threatening illnesses and support for their families.
In order to ensure that we are able to continue to provide the very best care to our patients in the future, it is essential that the in-patient unit is redeveloped. This will ensure that all patients are able to benefit from high quality, 21st century care in a modern Hospice setting for the next 25 years and beyond. Improvements will include the provision of more single, en-suite rooms, including facilities for partners to stay overnight, more areas for patients and relatives to enjoy family time together and improved medical equipment such as piped oxygen available at every bed.
To fund these essential works, Kirkwood launched a £3 million Capital Appeal on 31st January 2012. Marie Peacock, Capital Appeal Manager at Kirkwood said, “We hope that the people of Kirklees will get behind the appeal and work with us to help us to continue to provide the best care for our patients when they need it most.”
