Mirfield Support Group
After a public meeting in May 1982 at Batteyford School, a handful of people decided to form a Mirfield Support Group to raise funds for the building of Kirkwood Hospice. The first meeting was in September of that year at the home of Dora Shooter, who was made Chairman. The willing workers soon started arranging events which included coffee mornings held at the home of Dr Liz Higgins. Cake stalls and jumble sales were held and even an Art Exhibition. We repeated this theme in 2001 when an Art Festival was held at the Marmaville in Mirfield.
Things have changed over the 28 years but the aim of the 2010 committee is the same. We believe in having fun whilst raising money at our events. This has been the case when organising our popular Sing for your Supper, Pig Race Evenings and the ever popular Ascot Ladies Day Luncheon each June when the ladies have dressed in their Sunday best, including hats.
We acknowledge times have changed but the need is still the same. As a small group in Mirfield, it is our intention to continue to help the Hospice whilst putting smiles on the faces of the very generous people who give us their support.
