Making the most of every penny

In 2007, it is estimated the cost of providing hospice services will be in the region of £3.4million of which less than 20% will be funded by the local Primary Care Trusts.  This leaves over £2.7million to be raised by voluntary donations.

Since Kirkwood relies heavily on donations from local supporters it has a duty to spend the money cost effectively and in a way that will maximise the benefit to its patients.

In the 12 month period to 31st March 2006, there were;

  • 355 in-patients admitted to the hospice, ranging in ages from 28 years to 97 years
  • 957 patients were supported by our Palliative Care Team, who provided advice and gave emotional and psychological support to patients at home and in residential & nursing homes.  The team made 751 home visits and 2,870 telephone contacts with patients and families.
  • 2,646 attendances at Kirkwood Support & Therapy and 1,090 attendances at Drop-In
  • 2,994 contacts were made by the Family Care Team, who provide counselling and emotional support for patients and families during illness and in bereavement
  • 3,000 hours a month on average were contributed by volunteers in patient service areas alone.  In addition, many hours are given by volunteers in hospice shops and at fundraising events

During the same period the overall cost of running our shops and raising funds amounted to 22p in the £.  This means that from every £ donated, 78p was spent on patient care.

The hospice allocated donations received in the following proportions;

  • 70% in the in-patient unit
  • 15% in Support & Therapy (Day Care)
  • 6.5% in the Palliative Care Team
  • 5% in the Family Care Team (Bereavement Services)
  • 3.5% in Information & Education

The 2000 Club was launched on the 17th January 2000.  Since then, it has raised over £700,000 for the hospice.  All profit is used to benefit patients receiving care at the hospice.  The 2000Club currently has over 2,200 players.

When Mrs Alice Wardell of Scholes won our £500 jackpot she was in the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital recovering from a major operation.  “I couldn’t believe it, but I was absolutely delighted.  It gave me a great boost when I was poorly in hospital”, she told us.  Mrs Wardell has seven children and fourteen grandchildren and plans to share her winnings with the family and buy a picture of Bluebell Wood, where she used to walk on her way to school.

As part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations we have decided to re-name the 2000Club as Kirkwood Hospice Lottery.  We have also decided to increase the prize fund.  From April 2007, our prize fund will increase to £1,000 every week, comprising a first prize of £750, second prize of £100, third prize of £50 and five further prizes of £20 (as it is our 20th Anniversary!).

If you are a current 2000Club player you do not need to do anything.  We will continue to collect your payments in the usual way and you will be entered into the draw each week as normal.  The only difference is that now you have the chance to win up to £750 every week!

If you are not a current player and you want to join, all you need to do is complete the form below and send it to us, with your bank details or cheque payment (minimum of £13, for 13 weeks of play).  You will then receive your own membership card, including a unique membership number and you will be entered into the draw.  If you win, we will send out your winning cheque by post - so there is no need to check to see if you have won and no risk of you missing out on your winnings - and don’t forget every penny of profit from the lottery is used to maintain services at Kirkwood, caring for patients throughout Kirklees.

In 2006 the Lottery raised over £110,000 for the hospice. Please help us to increase this amount by completing the form on this page and becoming a member of Kirkwood Hospice Lottery today.  You could be our next lucky winner!
