Light up a Life
Christmas is a very special time of year for so many of us. It’s a time to celebrate and create new memories with people we love. But it’s also a time to reflect and remember loved ones who live on forever in our hearts.
Please contact the Fundraising Team on: 01484 557911 if you would like to request tickets for this event.
This December thousands of people will come together as part of Light up a Life appeal to remember people they love by dedicating a light in their honour on our Tree of Lights.
You might be thinking about someone who has died as the year draws to a close. Or you might be missing someone special who couldn’t make it home for Christmas. Light up a Life is your chance to pay tribute to those you love by dedicating a light in their honour.
This year we will once again hold three special ceremonies in our grounds at the Hospice on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th December at 4.30pm and Wednesday 11th December at 6.30pm.
A fourth, indoor service, will take place at the Longcauseway Church, Dewsbury, on Saturday 14th December at 12noon.
If you would like to remember someone special, please click here to tell us to whom you would like to dedicate your light.
When You Arrive
The ceremonies will start at 4.30pm sharp and will last approximately 30 minutes. As this is an outdoor ceremony, please remember to wear suitable clothing and footwear.
Parking will be available at Mill Hill Health Centre on Dalton Green Lane, HD5 9TS, please see below for a downloadable map. This car park has capacity for 40 cars, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
If you arrive after the spaces have been allocated, you will need to find a street parking spot. As the Hospice is situated in a residential area, we endeavour to minimise disruption for our neighbours. Therefore, it would be hugely helpful if you can please share vehicles wherever possible.
Mill Hill Health Centre is less than a ten minute walk to the Hospice. The area outside the Hospice can be used as a drop off point for family and friends if required. Limited parking for blue badge holders will be available within the Hospice grounds.
Refreshments will be available after the services and a selection of gifts and Christmas decorations will be available to purchase in the Gift Shop at the Main Reception.
There will be limited seating at each event - please arrive early if you require a seat. Please note, these are outdoor ceremonies and suitable footwear and clothing is advised.
A fourth, indoor service, will take place at the Longcauseway Church, Dewsbury, on Saturday 14th December at 12noon. Tickets are not required for this event.
Why I'm supporting Light up a Life - Steve's story
Jill was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017. Following a period of treatment over several months, she was given the all-clear and we thought we could resume our lives. However, Jill’s cancer returned very quickly; this time in the form of an inoperable brain tumour. Ten weeks after Jill was given the all-clear, she died peacefully at Kirkwood Hospice.
“Jill spent the last 11 days of her life at Kirkwood. It was an extremely turbulent time in our lives; a real emotional roller coaster. I am so thankful that she was admitted to the Hospice.
“Just before she was admitted to Kirkwood, Jill was in extreme pain. She told me that it felt like her head would explode. It only took Kirkwood a couple of hours to control her pain and make her comfortable. Jill really perked up after this and the final few days of her life were as peaceful as they could be. We enjoyed the glorious gardens at the Hospice, which we were in full bloom, and I was able to push her round in a wheelchair. I’ll never forget the memories of exploring Kirkwood’s gardens in the sunshine.
“When the end came, I played Jill’s favourite music and she passed into spirit in my arms in the tranquil setting of Kirkwood Hospice. I am so grateful that Jill spent her finals days in such a wonderful and caring place. I frequently return to the Hospice and it feels like coming home. It’s not upsetting in any way because Jill was looked after with so much love and compassion.
“I’ll be taking part in Light up a Life this December to remember Jill and to reflect on the person she was.”
