Beerhouses’ year of fundraising raises over £3,000 for Kirkwood

Back in January 2019, Dewsbury’s West Riding Licensed Refreshment Rooms celebrated its 25th year anniversary in style with the launch of the West25 Charity Challenge. Fast forward a year, the team have raised over £10,000 for three local charities, including Kirkwood Hospice.

Award winning Huddersfield based Beerhouses pride themselves on not only being at the heart of their community, by employing local people, brewers and contractors, but also by recognising the good work local charities like Kirkwood do for people in the Kirklees community.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the West25 Charity Challenge was born in 2019 as a chance to give back and the team set themselves the ambitious goal of raising £10,000 for Kirkwood Hospice, Candlelighters and Ben’s Music Foundation.

Beerhouses’ employees and customers, along with their friends and families have all rallied behind the 12 month challenge and taken on fundraisers themselves.

Over the last year, the Beerhouses team have taken on challenges including the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Climbing Mount Snowden and Scafell Pike, along with cycling the Leeds to Liverpool canal.

Employees and customers took part in creating an exclusive 2020 calendar, small in-pub events and Beerhouses’ very own Office Manager, Claire Cleverly, and her husband provided a unique taxi service throughout ‘Sober October’, giving up their free time and petrol on a ‘donation only’ basis!

With the Beerhouses team also celebrating winning the Heavy Woollen CAMRA pub of the year award in 2019, they collaborated with Elland Brewery to develop ‘Line Four’ with 10p from every pint adding to their growing West25 Challenge total.

The team exceeded their target spectacularly; Kirkwood is delighted to be receiving over £3,000 for patient care.

Sales and Operations Manager at Beerhouses Pubs, Barry Shaw, is delighted of the effort that everyone has put in during 2019 for Kirkwood and the local charities.

Barry said: “We are delighted to say that we beat our tough target of £10,000 to be split amongst our three great charities, as it stands we have raised around £10,300 with some still to come in.

“The effort some people have put in has been extraordinary and just goes to show how much people care and how good pubs are at raising money for charity.

“I would also like to thank some of our suppliers such as Elland Brewery, Cave Direct North & Timothy Taylors for their help and donations throughout this year as they have really helped us hit our target.”

Kirkwood Community Fundraiser, Joanna Doherty, was invited down to the West Riding Refreshment Rooms for a joint presentation with all the charities involved.

Joanna said: “It’s been an incredible year for the West Riding as they have achieved 25 consecutive years in The Good Beer Guide and to celebrate have raised an incredible £10,473 for local charities!

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and customers who have been involved in the West 25 Challenge. Your support means the world to us here at Kirkwood and the money raised will help us to continue the wonderful work that it done at the Hospice and out in the Kirklees community.”
