Devoted Granddaughter raises hundreds to remember her Grandad
Inspirational 8-year-old Olivia Kaye, of Lepton, covered herself in colour at Kirkwood’s Colour Rush this September, raising over £650 to remember her Grandad Kaye who spent his final days at Kirkwood in March this year.
On Sunday 8th September Olivia and her Dad, John, took on the boldest 5k in Kirklees at Kirkwood’s annual Colour Rush to remember Olivia’s beloved Grandad, and John’s Dad, Stephen Kaye. Stephen died at Kirkwood 18 months after been diagnosed with Cancer aged 76.
Before coming to Kirkwood, Stephen was cared for in his home in Netherton by Kirkwood’s Community Nurse, Kathryn Mannings, and was admitted to Kirkwood’s In-Patient Unit in his final days.
Olivia’s Mum, Katie said: “During his time at the Hospice, Stephen and all the family were treated with dignity, respect and compassion; we could not have received better care.
“Olivia and her siblings, Millie and Max, were able to spend precious last moments with their grandad; they saw him comfortable and pain free.”

When her Grandad Kaye was admitted to the In-Patient Unit, Olivia came up with a thoughtful idea that would create an everlasting memory.
“I gave Grandad Kaye my teddy called ‘Monkey’ to cuddle, and then when he died I took him back so I could cuddle him and keep as a memory.”

Stephen spent three days on the In-Patient Unit where his family were able to spend quality time together.
Olivia’s Dad, John said: “It was so relaxed at Kirkwood; I slept over the whole time. The staff were kind and they couldn’t do enough for us, it’s not like a hospital.
“I’m just so glad that my Dad could spend his final days at Kirkwood.
“We wanted to give something back to say thank you because we know how much the Hospice needs funds from the community, so Olivia and I decided to sign up to the Colour Rush.”
After already taking part back in 2017, Olivia was excited to be joining in the fun again, but this time, for a very special reason.
After a vibrant warm up to S Club 7’s Reach for the Stars, Olivia and her Dad were ready to take on the course.
Olivia said: “My favourite part of the day was running through the paint.”
A week after the Colour Rush, Olivia was super proud to present Events Assistant, Katie Hirst, with a cheque for a fantastic £669.24.
Olivia said: “I wanted to give something back so more families can experience what we did.”
Katie added: “We can’t thank Olivia enough for her donation, this really will make a difference to our patients and their families. We are so pleased that she enjoyed the event and we hope to see her again next year!”
