10-year-old Esme gets colourful for Kirkwood!
After learning how local charities were being affected by the coronavirus pandemic, inspirational 10-year-old Esme Gleghorn of Mirfield, decided to add a splash of colour to her beautiful blonde locks to raise money for Kirkwood.
Mirfield youngster, Esme, has been an avid supporter of Kirkwood for many years and has taken part in lots of fundraising events, like the Midnight Memory Walk and Colour Rush. She’s even been known to help her Auntie Jayne on her fundraising stalls selling sweetie cones.
Esme and her family began supporting Kirkwood years ago after a family friend, and Esme’s Auntie’s best friend, Louise, was cared for on Kirkwood’s In-Patient Unit.
After hearing that Kirkwood’s Midnight Memory Walk had been postponed, and realising she might not be able to take part this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Esme was quick to think of other ways she could support her local and beloved hospice.

Esme’s mum, Kate Fisher said: “Esme really wanted to support the front line workers who are working hard at the moment. I explained to my children that many local charities were struggling to raise funds due to the lockdown, including Kirkwood Hospice.
“As soon as Esme heard that Kirkwood needed extra support, she knew she wanted to do something special to help.”
Since the initial outbreak of coronavirus in the UK, thousands of families have been using the rainbow as a symbol to show their support and gratitude for the NHS and key workers who are working extremely hard during these times.
Inspired by this, Esme, who is described by her mum as the boldest of her three siblings, decided she wanted to add a splash of colour to her blonde locks.
Kate said: “When Esme said she wanted to dye her hair all colours of the rainbow for Kirkwood, I thought it was a fantastic idea and I ordered the colours straight away.”
On Easter Sunday, whilst the sun was shining, Esme got herself comfortable in her family garden ready for her mum to transform her locks in to bright and beautiful colours.

Esme, who was aiming to raise around £100, has been overwhelmed and thrilled by the support of her local community. Esme has so far raised an incredible £405, with more donations still being added to her Just Giving Page!
Kate said: “I am so proud of Esme. So many people have been touched by Kirkwood, and this is our way of supporting them during these difficult times.”
