Essential works to take place at Kirkwood in August
With demand for our services set to increase in the future, Kirkwood recently carried out a detailed piece of work to look at the current infrastructure in place at the main Hospice site in Dalton. As a result of this work, a series of essential works have been planned to take place this August.
Essential works are set to take place at Kirkwood Hospice’s main site in Dalton between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019. During these works, the entire site will be without power for a number of days. We have therefore taken the difficult but necessary decision to close the In-Patient Unit for a two week period.
Kirkwood is taking a pro-active approach to the enforced reduction of services and has planned a series of other maintenance projects to take place at the same time. All the works will be completed between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019, which will help Kirkwood to prevent more service interruptions in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is the Hospice closing permanently?
No. We are planning to temporarily reduce the services we provide at the main Kirkwood Hospice site for a period of two weeks.
A series of essential works have been planned to take place between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019. The In-Patient Unit and Support & Therapy Departments will need to be closed during this period to allow these to take place.
Whilst we are reducing our services for a short period of time, Kirkwood will continue to provide care for those who need support during this period. We will be redeploying some of our clinical staff, including registered nurses and doctors, to ensure patients are more actively managed in the community.
Why do the works need to take place?
We recently carried out a detailed piece of work to look at the infrastructure at the main Hospice site in Dalton and identified an urgent need to upgrade our electrical systems.
Work to upgrade our electrical systems has been scheduled to take place between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019. During this time, there will be no power to the main Hospice site for a number of days.
How long will services be affected?
The In-Patient Unit will be closed between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019. We envisage that patient numbers will start to be reduced from the end of July to make sure we minimise disruption for patients and their families.
Our main priority will be to minimise the impact that the closure has on patients, carers and families who may need our care during this time.
Where will patients go to who would normally have been admitted to In-Patient Unit?
Patients who would normally be considered for admission to the In-Patient Unit at Kirkwood Hospice will be more actively managed in the community, including receiving regular visits from our doctors and nurses. This will start to from the end of July as In-Patient bed numbers are slowly reduced in preparation for the temporary closure.
For some patients, other options may be more suitable. We are working closely with other local hospices and our healthcare partners across Kirklees to provide personalised care for each of our patients on a case by case basis.
Will Support & Therapy Drop In sessions and regular sessions still take place?
Our Support & Therapy Department will be closed between Monday 19th August and Sunday 1st September 2019. This will mean there will be no Drop In sessions during this two week period. Planned programmes such as The Share and Care Group, Getting On and Living and Keeping Active classes will also be affected.
How will community services be affected?
The Community Specialist Palliative Care Team will continue to provide services as normal throughout this period. Registered Nurses and Doctors from the In-Patient Unit will be supporting the community team to make sure that patients continue to be supported.
Our team will provide additional support for patients who would normally be considered for admission during this period. These patients will be more actively managed in the community, including regular visits from our doctors and nurses.
What about the 24/7 Advice Line?
Our 24/7 Specialist Advice Line will continue to operate as normal throughout this period, meaning that patients, family members and professionals will continue to be able to seek advice 24 hours a day.
