Food Warehouse choose Kirkwood as Charity of the Year

Kirkwood is delighted to be chosen as newly opened Food Warehouse’s 2020 Charity of the Year.

Food Warehouse by Iceland first opened its doors on Leeds Road Retail Park back in March 2019 and since then; it has been a massive hit with the Huddersfield community.

Combining the convenience of bulk buying stores with the fresh and frozen deals usually found in Iceland, Food Warehouse has successfully been opening stores up and down the country since 2014.

Food Warehouse had previously supported a national charity, with all stores in 2019 raising money for Alzheimer’s Society. The company have since listened to their employees and have now given them the chance to choose their own charities.

For 2020, Huddersfield branch employees collectively decided to keep their fundraising local, choosing Kirkwood Hospice as their Charity of the Year.

With many Food Warehouse employees living locally, some have had their own personal experiences with Kirkwood and others know someone close who has accessed services.

Store Manager, Marrisa Booth, said: “Having a Charity of the Year isn’t just about raising money; it’s about what else we can do to help Kirkwood.

The Food Warehouse team

“Our staff have all been really engaging with the new Charity of the Year choice, it’s because Kirkwood is a local charity. They haven’t been told they have to do something, they’ve all wanted to get involved.”

The Food Warehouse team have set themselves the ambitious goal of raising £4,000 for their local Hospice over the course of the year.

The team are hoping to cram in lots of fundraisers both within their teams and on the shop floor for their customers to get involved. In the hopes to get customers also engaging with Kirkwood, the team also have ideas of hosting information stalls about Kirkwood at the store.

Kirkwood Community Fundraiser, Julia Owen, recently paid the Food Warehouse team a visit ahead of their year of fundraising.

Julia said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that Food Warehouse have chosen Kirkwood as their Charity of the Year. It’s amazing to see local people get behind raising money for a local charity.

“Their fundraising throughout the year will make a huge difference to people in Kirklees and I’m really looking forward to working closely with them throughout 2020.”
