Kirkwood groups nominated for Examiner Community Awards
Kirkwood is delighted to announce that two devoted Kirkwood supporter groups have been nominated at the Huddersfield Examiner Community Awards this coming Thursday.
Every year, the Huddersfield Examiner searches for stars in our local community, to give them recognition and to celebrate their achievements.
The awards include a number of different categories that enable people from all walks of life and all age groups to be nominated, all with one thing in common – to inspire others with their efforts.
Kirkwood is delighted that two support groups have been nominated for this year’s awards, which is set to take place this Thursday 26th June.
Mirfield based group, Sarah’s Wish for Kirkwood, is understandably short-listed in the Community Group of the Year Award.
Their support since 2018, by hosting Family Fun Days, and more recently a variety of virtual events, has raised over £30,000 for the Sarah’s Wish Tribute Fund at Kirkwood.
Sarah's Wish for Kirkwood
The group was initially set up in memory of Sarah Green - a beloved wife, mum, and wonderful friend to many within the Mirfield community.
Sarah spent her final weeks being cared for at Kirkwood and was determined to make sure her legacy continued so others could benefit from Kirkwood in the same way Sarah and her family had.
Secondly, Dee’s Group, founded by Denise Cobbett, is short-listed for the Services to Charity Award.
Dee began her journey with Kirkwood 30 years ago, attending Support Group Coffee Morning events before setting out to host her own raffles and tombola’s for the Dalton based Support Group.
Dee spent many years fundraising with the group before branching off and setting her own group up in 2012 – Dee’s Group.

Dee gained many loyal volunteers who have dedicated their time to supporting Kirkwood over the last eight years. From volunteering their time, to raising money at events and even managing the newly opened Kirkwood Coffee Shop in Denby Dale, Dee’s Group have raised a staggering £90,000 for Kirkwood.
Both groups are an integral part of the Kirkwood community and their support continues to make a huge difference locally.
Sadly, this year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Examiner Community Awards were initially postponed until September, in the hopes of being able to bring the community together to celebrate the winners.
However, as the guidance around future gatherings remains uncertain, the committee are hosting a very special virtual awards ceremony, live from your living room!
The live stream is completely free to join in with hosts Nina Hossain and Andy Hirst beginning the ceremony from 6.30pm until 8pm that evening.
The committee encourage anyone watching to get involved in the fun and create the same menus in their own homes to recreate and evening spent together.
