Lacing up on the opposite side of the world

On Saturday 22nd June, 1,410 walkers from across Kirklees and beyond came together to make the 2019 Midnight Memory Walk our biggest and best yet.

This year’s Midnight Memory Walk raised a record breaking £148, 796 to support the vital care Kirkwood provide for anyone affected by life limiting illnesses across Kirklees, when and where they need it. Families and friends came together to walk six or ten miles last Saturday in memory of their loved ones, this is Helen’s story:

Helen Cave currently lives in Goulburn Nsw, Australia and on Saturday 22nd June, she joined her family and friends by lacing up and taking part in the Midnight Memory Walk from the opposite side of the world.

Helen’s sister, Liz Stead, along with her friend, Judith, Helen and Liz’s step-sister, Louise, and Louise’s daughter, Lia, all descended on the streets of Huddersfield, walking the ten mile route in memory of their dad and brother.

In preparation for the walk, Helen made the decision to walk ten miles herself to support her family back in Huddersfield.

Helen said: “I couldn’t complete in the same location but I wanted to be with them. So at 6am a freezing morning in Goulburn Nsw, Australia, I got out of bed and prepared to start walking at 9am (Midnight in Huddersfield).

“I completed the ten miles in 3 hours 17 minutes and about half an hour ahead of my sister back in Huddersfield! Whilst I was completing the torturous walk on the treadmill, I was watching videos from Huddersfield of the surroundings and that kept me going.

“I really didn’t think it would be as hard as it was and I only decided to complete the walk with my sister the day before, but I thought I should help her on this journey.

“It’s exciting that Liz raised so much money and the walk as a whole!

“Kirkwood does amazing work and I remember with kindness, the care and love the staff gave to us 25 years ago this December when my dad, Richard Stead, died.”

Helen is being sent a 2019 Midnight Memory Walk as a keepsake for the challenge she has completed, and will proudly place it next to photos of her dad and brother at home.
