Milestone achievement for Kirkwood’s Lottery Manager Dawn

On Friday 1st March, Kirkwood’s Dawn Walker, celebrated a landmark achievement as the Kirkwood Lottery reached its 1,000th draw!

Long serving Kirkwood fundraiser, Dawn Walker, is one of the charity’s longest standing employees, with almost two decades under her belt. On Friday 1st March, she had the honour of drawing the Kirkwood Lottery for an historic 1,000th time.

Mirfield-based Dawn was recruited to Kirkwood back in September 1999, from the fast paced world of manufacturing, where she worked for a company exporting goods around the globe. She was brought in to head up the charity’s fledgling Lottery campaign, then known as ‘The 2000 Club’.

The 2000 Club launched in January 2000 with just 1,000 players. Over the next 19 years, Dawn and her team, would go on to achieve huge things.

Membership has swelled to 12,200 members in the 19 years since its introduction. In that time, weekly players from Kirklees and beyond have helped to raise over £5.2million towards patient care at Kirkwood.

Dawn reflects on her time at Kirkwood with pride.

“Things have changed a lot over the years.” Dawn reflects. “When the 2000 Club was launched, we had around 1,000 members. We now have over 12,000 so it’s completely different today. The job is huge!”

“We started trying to recruit back in 1999 by advertising for new members in local newspapers, like the Huddersfield Examiner, as well as mailing supporters and putting adverts in the Kirkwood newsletter.

“We managed to get to 1,000 players by the time we launched which was a huge achievement. To think all that time ago that we would be sat here today having raised over £5million for Kirkwood would have seemed crazy.”

After almost two decades of success, the Kirkwood Lottery is an integral part of our fundraising efforts. Last year alone, regular players helped Kirkwood to raise a staggering £684,266 to care for people in Kirklees affected by any life limiting illness.

Kirkwood’s weekly draw now gives players the chance to win £1,000 in cash prizes, including a £750 jackpot. The Lottery also boasts two Superdraws every year and the team have introduced two brand new scratchcard game in its shops, which are already proving popular with shoppers.

She said: “I’d like to say a personal thank you to everyone who has taken part in our Lottery over the years.
