Millie completes her challenge and smashes her fundraising target

Today we are bringing you the story of an inspirational 11-year-old, Millie Woodcock, who has raised the wonderful amount of £645 for Kirkwood Hospice in memory of her Grandad.

Millie, who lives in Honley, came up with the idea of running a half marathon distance over a series of events in a period of 6 months.

This challenge became known as ‘Millie’s Half Marathon’ with family and friends sponsoring Millie along the way. Millie wanted to raise £500 – a target which she has absolutely smashed!

Millie's challenge kicked off with a wet and windy 5km parkrun at Greenhead Park in March 2018. The conditions did not deter this determined youngster who completed the course regardless.

Millie then participated in additional park runs before her challenge culminated at the end of September at Kirkwood’s Colour Rush event.

What makes Millie’s achievement all the more remarkable is that she finished her challenge despite some health issues. Sometimes, Millie is in a lot of pain and is not able to exercise.

Despite this, she completed the 13.1 miles when she was well enough to run showing a tremendous amount of courage along the way.

Millie and her family at Kirkwood

Millie said: “My Grandad spent time in Kirkwood in 2017 and I wanted to raise money for them to say thank you. They were so kind and gentle, and gave Grandad the best care. They also helped us all as a family supporting us with counselling.

“I am doing this to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers at the Hospice so that they can help people that are poorly to get the fantastic care my Grandad had.”

Millie recently paid a visit to Kirkwood with her family, to present Wasim Hussain her fundraising donation.

Wasim said: “We are very lucky at Kirkwood Hospice because we get to meet some amazing people. Millie is certainly one of these people. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Millie for her determination and dedication, and to everyone who helped her.”
