One of Kirkwood’s longest standing Lottery members
One of Kirkwood’s longest standing supporters, Gwen Martin, has been playing the Kirkwood Lottery since its inception back in 2000.
Gwen Martin, of Heckmondwike, has been an instrumental part of Kirkwood’s fundraising right from the get-go. Gwen was an original member of the Heckmondwike Support Group that helped fundraise the £1 million that enabled Kirkwood’s doors to open in 1987.
Over the years, Gwen took over the role as Chair for the Heckmondwike Support Group and even supported the Cleckheaton Support Group at their fundraising events.
Gwen’s fundraising didn’t stop even after the Support Group finished their fundraising activities; taking matters into her own hands and creating her very own fundraisers to do her bit for the local cause.
Gwen created many 1 meter ribbons filled with 20p to sell that she then donated to Kirkwood.
Howard, Gwen’s husband, even got into the fundraising spirit at the shop they owned in Heckmondwike. They collected sunshine money in bags and encouraged other local businesses on the street to do the same.
Every time the sun was shining, Gwen and Howard would put 2p in a bag. Over the many years they ran the shop, they filled hundreds of bags!
Gwen also donated her time by volunteering at the Hospice every Thursday morning. In addition to this, back in 2000 when the Lottery began, Gwen immediately became a member.

In fact, Gwen’s lottery number was chosen in Lottery Manager Dawn’s test draw and now, 19 years later, it was chosen again as she was one of the winners earlier this August!
Since retiring from volunteering at Kirkwood, Gwen and Howard spent a lot of time visiting their two grandsons in Edinburgh and even taking a two week trip to Cyprus to visit their daughter last year.
This November, the two will be celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary, having tied the knot back in 1957.
Howard, Gwen’s husband, said: “Gwen has raised a lot of money over the years for Kirkwood, through the Support Group, individually and being a member of the Lottery. It was always about supporting her local Hospice.

“Playing the Kirkwood Lottery is a great way to support your local Hospice. It’s an easy way of giving a regular donation to Kirkwood.”
Lottery Manager, Dawn Walker, said: “We are so thankful for dedicated supporters like Gwen. It has been a pleasure knowing Gwen right from the very first Lottery draw and I’m so pleased she’s won something back.
“The Kirkwood Lottery is a great way to regularly donate and make a difference to your local community, but it also gives you the chance of winning up to £1,000 in cash prizes every week!”
