Spring Valley Community Centre hosts a tea-rrific Cuppa for Kirkwood!
Back in September, Helen Womersley, of Liversedge, got together with the Spring Valley Community Centre committee to organise their very first Cuppa for Kirkwood in support of their local Hospice.
For many years, Helen and the Spring Valley Community Centre committee have organised fabulous fundraisers to support some wonderful causes, including Macmillan Cancer Support.
This year, they decided to hold an event in aid of Kirkwood.
After Helen’s friend was diagnosed with cancer, she was surprised to find out that it would be Kirkwood’s team of Community Nurse Specialists providing specialist care and support for her at home.
Helen said: “My friend, who sadly died on Sunday 27th October, had told me that when she was initially diagnosed she spoke to Macmillan and was made aware that they didn’t provide specialist support for people at home in Kirklees and that it would be Kirkwood providing her with Palliative Care.
“I have also had other family members and friends who have been supported by Kirkwood, so we decided to give the Hospice fundraising team a call to enquire about how we could help.
“Shortly after calling Kirkwood, Community Fundraiser Joanna Doherty got in touch with me and told me about their annual new Cuppa for Kirkwood campaign.
The committee have organised Coffee Mornings in the past at the Community Centre and, as soon as they heard about Cuppa for Kirkwood, they were keen to get involved.
Helen said: “I spoke to the committee at the Community Centre and everyone was really on board, so we set a date of Friday 27th September.
“Everyone pulled together, including Yvonne Hirst and her friends, who provided marvellous raffle prizes and sold lots of tickets. We had spa day vouchers, Marks & Spencer’s vouchers, jewellery, alcohol, Tea for Two, Hampers and more! It was fantastic.
“Yvonne and her friends also baked cakes and sold them on the day. Sharon Wells and Val Atkins also baked delicious cakes to sell with the coffee and tea.
“It was a really good turnout on the day, we all enjoyed it; it was a chance for everyone to come together. So many people from the local community stopped by to support us.”
Joanna, Community Fundraiser at Kirkwood, was there on the day too: “It was wonderful to be there on the day and help on a stall. Helen, Yvonne and the whole committee have done a marvellous job. It was a fabulous atmosphere – I can’t wait for next year already!”
After weeks of planning and hard work, the committee were pleased to learn they had raised an astonishing £1,240 for Kirkwood!
Helen said: “We are all absolutely thrilled to bits with how much has been raised.
“Olwyn and I couldn’t wait to drop off the donation at Kirkwood the following day.”
“We’ve always previously supported Macmillan Coffee Mornings, but we have now decided to start supporting our local Hospice, Kirkwood, and we can’t wait to start plans for next year!”
