Kathryn's career in the NHS spanned 38 years. She is a qualified nurse and midwife and gained experience in a range of clinical nursing and nurse management posts within medical, critical care, and surgical services in West Yorkshire Trusts. She spent the final 10 years of her career as Director of Education Commissioning within the workforce arm of Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority.
After retiring Kathryn applied to Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) to be a health volunteer. In 2010 became Organisational Development Advisor to the Cambodian Midwives Council, carrying out this role until the end of 2013.
On her previous volunteering roles Kathryn said: “Living in a country with a different approach to human rights and working within an extremely poorly resourced health system was both difficult and challenging but hugely rewarding and made me appreciate how fortunate we are in the UK.”
Kathyn is currently involved in several other volunteer roles including as a selector for VSO in the UK, a Lay Member of the Association of Child Psychotherapy and is still involved in health professional education as a ‘Simulated Patient’.
Of her appointment as a Trustee, she says “To serve my local community in this capacity is a great privilege, and I am keen to support the Executive Team and staff as they build on the successes of the past and take Kirkwood forwards into the future.”
Kathryn lives in Farnley Tyas.
